Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian government to urgently intervene to quell the killings in Zamfara state that has left scores dead and many wounded.

According to the organisation, about 50 people were killed “in Birnin Magaji, Maradun and Tsafe LGA’s in two weeks, as rampaging gunmen murder & maim rural communities.”

An account said trouble began when a group of armed men stormed Magami village of Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State and opened fire on those praying in a Mosque.

The victims were attacked and killed along with on Alhaji Aliyu Abbas, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain.

On Saturday around 4:30 pm, the bandits, numbering 20, on motorcycles, armed with sophisticated weapons surrounded Magami village.

The involvement of the soldiers in trying to contain the situation may have led to the death of three persons and other in severe injuries.

Abdulaziz Yari, Zamfara state governor is not forthcoming with quick intervention because he feels the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has not accorded him the opportunity to exercise his constitutional role as the chief security officer of the state.
