The Lagos State House of Assembly is desperate to remove the governor ahead of the Mat 29 hand over to a new man.
On Monday evening, the Lagos lawmakers began moves to impeach Governor Akinwunmi Ambode over gross misconduct they want him to appear to substantiate.
At their plenary on Monday evening, the lawmakers accused Ambode of offences relating to gross misconduct and spending budget that had not been laid before the Lagos House Assembly for approval.
Of the 34 lawmakers who spoke during plenary on Monday, 28 called for Ambode’s removal through impeachment.
The remaining six others wanted the governor to resign.
Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, canvassed need for the House to give Ambode a chance to appear before the House to defend himself over the allegations.
Obasa said the Assembly was giving Ambode one week to appear before it to defend himself or face impeachment proceedings.
The speakers advised lawmakers who still wanted the governor to be impeached to start gathering signatures.
At the end, the lawmakers agreed to summon the governor, and three commissioners – Commissioners for Finance; Economic Planning and Budget and the Attorney General to appear at their next meeting on Monday, February 4.
