President Muhammadu Buhari was reported to have sacked the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

Elombah News  had reported that Emefiele has been asked to hand over within two weeks to an unnamed person.

Emefiele was appointed into the office by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014. His five year tenure is expected to lapse by June this year.

No reason has been given for his removal.

A letter of suspension was said to have been handed over to Emefiele on Monday, apparently asking him to explain why he will continue to remain in office as CBN governor.

Sources told armadanews.com that the CBN headquarters became quiet the moment the news broke with many management staff wondering would would have happened.

Isaac Okoroafor, CBN Director of Publicity and Media was quoted to have said Emefiele was neither suspended nor sacked. “It is not true,” Okoroafor told TheNiche newspaper.
