Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been nominated for a second term. His first five year tenure is expected to end next month.
President Muhammadu Buhari was said to have signed the letter for the renewal Emefiele’s term on Wednesday, the first time since 1999 that anyone would be nominated to serve two terms as CBN governor.
Senate President Bukola Saraki on Thursday read the presidential communication seeking the confirmation of Emefiele for another term of five years at the plenary.
In far away London where he was canvassing for investors, the news of his nomination was broken to him, with his supporters jubilating ahead of Senate confirmation.
Haruna Jalo-Waziri, Chief Executive Officer of CSCS took to his twitter to post the renomination story, but later pulled it because of the attention it created.
There are more twits from other market and financial analysts some suggesting that “Emefiele will get the second term he wanted afterall,” according to Paul Wallace @PaulWallace123.
Emefiele was being congratulated at the London event to his surprise.
Before his appointment in 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, Emefiele was group managing director of Zenith Bank Plc.
Buhari did not replace him when he took over from Jonathan in 2015.
The Senate would be expected to either confirm or reject the nomination.
If the Senat confirms Emefiele for another five-year tenure, the CBN governor will exit office in 2024.
