The Senate has commenced the screening of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, for a second term.

Emefiele is appeared before the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, where he was being asked questions on the economy of Nigeria.

His screening is coming days after President Muhammadu Buhari nominated him for a second term.

At the screening exercise the CBN Governor responded to two questions asked by the lawmakers.

One of the questions asked was on his plans for boosting agriculture, to which he responded, saying special programmes targeted at wholesale growth of agriculture in Nigeria were being mapped out and that the country was  looking at growing the palm oil and cocoa  markets.

He further said the anchor borrowers programme would reach every part of the country within the next two years.

Regarding claims that there are multiple exchange rates, he insisted there are  no multiple exchange rates, only multiple windows because banks have rights to provide foreign exchange and that specific sums were given to banks for people who want to travel, micro small and medium enterprises and corporate sector.

The letter for the tenure elongation of Emefiele’s service was sent to the Senate last Wednesday and read during plenary on Thursday.

Emefiele was first appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014 and was retained after Buhari assumed office in 2015.
