Rising from its meeting with the federal government on Monday morning, the organised labour has suspended its nation-wide strike, scheduled to begin today, Monday, September 28.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige said the decision to shelve the strike was reached at a technical session between the government and labour leaders.

The meeting started late on Sunday and lasted till the early hours of Monday morning.

The parties resolved that the federal government will suspend the electricity tariff hike for two weeks and set up a committee to look into the complaints by workers regarding the electricity tariff increase.

The committee is to be headed by  Ngige, to be represented by the Minister of State for Labour, Mr Festus Keyamo.

Parties, based on the agreement, on Monday, resolved to allow the new price of petrol even as the government promised to improve local refining capacity by revamping the four refineries located in Port Harcourt, Warrior and Kaduna.

The government also promised to pursue the CNG alternative aggressively by providing CNG mass transit buses across the country.

Based on the agreement, the organized labour suspended its planned strike but stated that in the event government failed to keep its part of the deal in the next two weeks, it may be compelled to proceed with the strike.
