Nigeria’s chief of army staff, Lt General Ibrahim Attahiru has died in a plane crash on Friday while on an official trip to Kaduna State.
Although the Nigerian Army is yet to make any official statement on the incident, the Nigerian Air Force confirmed one of its aircraft crashed on Friday near Kaduna International Airport.
Air Force spokesman Edward Gabkwet said the immediate cause of the crash has not been ascertained.
Sources said some other military officials and aides of the Army boss, whose identities were not immediately known, also lost their lives in the crash.
“An air crash involving a @NigAirForce aircraft occurred this evening near the Kaduna International Airport. The immediate cause of the crash is still being ascertained. More details to follow soon,” Gabkwet was quoted to have said in a statement.
Attahiru, until his appointment in January, was the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu.
