The Senate, Tuesday rejected the nomination of Lauretta Onochie as an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) National Commissioner.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in October 2020 nominated Onochie, one of his media aides from Delta state and three others as national commissioners of the INEC.

The three other nominees were Prof. Mohammed Sani from Katsina State; Prof. Kunle Ajayi from Ekiti State and Seidu Ahmed from Jigawa.

Onochie ‘s rejection by the Upper Chamber followed  the barrage of criticisms that greeted her nomination, especially from the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and civil society organisations who insisted she is a card-carrying member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, Onochie had during her screening last Thursday, insisted she is not partisan and did not partake in the APC’s recent validation exercise

She claimed that since President Buhari won his second term, she has removed herself from partisan politics.
