Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Bayern Munich saw off Borussia Dortmund in a frentic DFL-Super Cup contest at Signal Iduna Park.

Julian Naigelsmann claimed his first piece of silverware as Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller scored to secure a 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the DFL Super Cup final.

In a frantic encounter between the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal winners at Signal Iduna Park, it was Bayern who defended their crown in the third straight super cup meeting between the Klassiker rivals.

Lewandowski broke Gerd Muller’s long standing record of 40 top flight goals in a Bundesliga season with the final kick of 2020-2021, and he fittingly opened the scoring two days after the Bayern great’s passing.

Muller put Bayern in complete control and although Marco Reus’ stunner gave Dortmund hope, Lewandowski capitalized on Manuel Akanji’s error to seal victory.

It is Naigelsmann’s first trophy as a coach, while Bayern have now won the Supercup on nine occasions, three more than Dortmund, who are their nearest rival in that regard.

Dortmund travel to Freiburg on Saturday while Naigelsmann will get his first taste of the Allianz Arena as a home coach when Bayern host Cologne a day later.  Image: fcbayern.com
