Rivers Police Nab Serving PDP Lawmaker With $498,000 Cash

Less than 24 hours to the the presidential and national assembly elections, operatives of the Rivers State Police Command, have arrested a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Chinyere Igwe, allegedly in possession of $498,100 cash.

Igwe, a staunch supporter of PDP presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is the PDP lawmaker representing Port Harcourt II federal constituency.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe- Koko confirmed the lawmaker was apprehended on Aba Road, Port Harcourt with a list for the distribution of the money.

The list, had beneficiaries in the 23 local government areas of the State as well as security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a source said.

“Police officers from Rivers state command deployed to INEC headquarters, Aba road today 24/2/2023 at about 0245hrs, while on stop and search, arrested one honourable Chinyere Igwe, member house of representatives representing Port Harcourt II federal constituency with a cash sum of $498,100 inside a bag in his car,” TheCable quoted the police spokesperson to have said in a statement.

“Also recovered was a list for distribution of the money”, statement added.

The PPRO said the assistant inspector-general (elections), Abutu Yaro has ordered “swift interrogation” of the lawmaker and subsequent arraignment in court.
