It has emerged that the just- suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Aso Rock sources hinted Emefiele’s arrest might be in connection with allegations of fraud and terrorism financing levelled against him.
President Bola Tinubu, earlier today (Friday), suspended Emefiele and directed him to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.
Willie Bassey, Director of Information in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said the decision was sequel to the ongoing investigation of Emefiele’s office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
The DSS had accused Emefiele of being involved in the financing of terrorism.
According to the secret police, preliminary investigations “revealed various acts of terrorism financing, fraudulent activities perpetrated by Emefiele and his involvement in economic crimes of national security dimension.”
The embattled expelled CBN boss had sought and obtained an order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, restraining the DSS from arresting, detaining or questioning him.
