The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody for investigation.

In a statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Peter Afunanya, on Saturday, the secret police said: “The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody for some investigative reasons.”

The DSS warned: “The public, particularly the Media, is enjoined to apply utmost caution in the reportage and narratives concerning this.”

President Bola Tinubu, had on Friday, suspended Emefiele and directed him to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), Mr. Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.
Director of Information in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey, said in a statement that the decision was sequel to the ongoing investigation of Emefiele’s office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.

The DSS had accused Emefiele of being involved in fraudulent activities and terrorism financing.

In February, the secret police had made several failed attempts to arrest Emefiele for interrogation, as it said, preliminary investigations allegedly “revealed various acts of terrorism financing, fraudulent activities and involvement in economic crimes of national security dimension perpetrated” by the suspended Governor of CBN.

The embattled expelled CBN boss had sought and obtained an order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, restraining the DSS from arresting, detaining or questioning him.
