Conference of Nigerian Surgical Research Society Holds in Owerri

The Nigerian Surgical Research Society (NSRS) has successfully held its 81st Scientific Conference with the purpose to explore the latest development in the field of surgery.
The 81st Scientific Conference of NSRS took place at the Federal University Teaching Hosptal, Owerri.
Declaring the conference open, the Imo state Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma who was represented on the occasion by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Success Prosper Ohayagha, appreciated the role NSRS plays in the society.
According to Governor Uzodimma, “We are happy this year that a lot of good things have happened to us in Imo, we have been able to have Federal Medical Center (FMC) turn into a teaching hospital, and today the teaching hospital is hosting the NSRS, what it means is that best thing is yet to come out of this place”.
The state governor, however, assured them that his government will continue to support everything about the health sector, pointing
out that he has their interest at heart, and wish them well as they gather in Imo with the common goal of advancing surgical knowledge, sharing experiences and exploring the latest development in the field of surgery.
In his remarks, the chairman of the occasion, who is also the President of NSRS, Dr Udo lsaac from the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital stated that surgical research is a very critical aspect of surgery, adding that it is through research that they have been able to improve the outcome for their patients.
In the words of Prof. Okoro, “Just like the name says, it is a society with just one aim to advanced surgical research in Nigeria, and we meet twice a year, the first week of July and the first week of December, we rotate our activities in different hospitals in Nigeria, particularly in centres where we have academic activities”.
Adding his voice, the Chief Host who is also Chief Medical Director, Dr. Kingsley . Achigbu, represented by the CMAC Dr. Chukwumam, said the main objective of the scientific conference is to create space for the presentation of current results of scientific work in the field of Contemporary Public Administration, Public Economy, Social and Regional Policy.
He further stated that the conference is also a platform for creating collaborative links between academics and professional practitioners and their workplace, aiming at the long-term sharing of knowledge and discussions of highly current issues.
Earlier in his address, the Local Organizing Chairman, Dr Okechukwu Duru, disclosed that the conference served as a testament to their commitment to excellence in surgical practice, research, and education, noting that it is also a link that brings together esteemed Surgeons, Medical Professionals, Researchers and Students, fostering collaboration and networking opportunities that undoubtedly shapes the future of surgery in Nigeria.
The programme featured the first, second and third Scientific Sessions where Dr Obioha I.C spoke on their Experience with Ponseti treatment ond Achilles tenotomy in the treatment of clubfoot at FMC Oweri, Dr Isiguzo CM spoke on Skin Grafting Recipient Site Preparation in the Limbs with a bloodless technique, Dr lgwe P.O
spoke on Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in Sickle Cell Disease Patients, while Dr Chineme M. Anyaeze spoke on the Clinical Copathological characteristics of Prostrate Cancer with family
history in Imo state.
Others are, Dr Egekwu Chimarokes on the Management of patients with advanced prostate cancer and side effects of androgen deprivation therapy in Owerri, Nigeria, Dr George Chilaka Obonna spoke on comparing closed and open access techniques of establishing hemoperitoneum in Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in Ondo South Western Nigeria.
