A Constitution Amendment Bill to introduce state police has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.
The House of Representatives has passed for second reading a Constitution Amendment Bill, seeking the creation of state police.in Nigeria.
The bill sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu and co-sponsored by the House leader Julius Ihonvbere, Chief Whip, Onanuga Oriyomi, and 10 others was read for the first time on Tuesday at Plenary.
The bill, which comprises 18 clauses, seeks to alter sections 34, 35, 39, 42, 84, 89, and 129 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, provides for the transfer of police from an “exclusive legislative list” to the “concurrent legislative list”, a move that efficiently empowers states to have state-controlled policing.
At a meeting last week, between President Bola Tinubu and the 36 state governors, establishment of state police was considered as the solution to the heightened security challenges in the country.
