The Lagos State Government on Thursday, August 24 commenced the sale of Lake Rice in designated centres in the state as the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebration draws close.
The Sallah occasion takes place on September 1 according to the Sultan of Sokoto, leader of Muslim community in Nigeria.
In most of the Lagos sale centres visited, residents queued up to buy the rice in orderly manner, with 50kg of the rice selling for N12,000, 25kg for N6,000 and 10kg for N2500.
“I just bought the rice and I must commend Governor Ambode. This is evident that the Governor is passionate about the interest and welfare of the people”, said one of the buyers,
The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Sa’ad Abubakar, announced recently that September 1, is Eid-el-Kabir day.
The day had earlier been declared by the Saudi Arabian government as the day of the festival celebrated by Muslims all over the world.
The festival is marked by the killing of rams by Muslims who can afford it who then eat and share the meat and food with families, friends, and the less privileged.
The sultan’s announcement was stated in a statement signed by Sambo Junaidu, the Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs to the Sokoto Sultanate Council.
