The Nigeria Senate and the House of Representatives on Tuesday Speedily passed the National Minimum Wage Act 2019 (Amendment Bill), ending months of wrangling between the government and labour unions.

The bill, which scaled second and third readings at both legislative chambers in the National Assembly, shortly after it was transmitted by President Bola Tinubu, was instantly passed separately by the two legislative chambers.

The wage bill, passed at an accelerated hearing, amends the 2019 minimum wage law, cutting the review period for public wages to three years from five years.

The federal government and labour  had on Thursday, agreed on the new minimum wage after talks with the government after months of deadlock and the threat of strikes.

The bill scaled third reading following a unanimous vote after a clause consideration in the Committee of the Whole, the National Minimum Wage Bill scaled third reading and was passed at the Senate. It was also passed immediately by the lower chamber.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier transmitted the National Minimum Wage Bill to the National Assembly for consideration and passage. He is expected to sign the bill into law soon.
