Former Vice President Alex Ekwueme has eventually been flown abroad for medical treatment.

He was airlifted on Sunday morning in an air ambulance marked N605AJ through the Akanu Ibiam international airport Enugu.

Ekwueme took ill on October 29 and was hospitalised over chest related infection at an Enugu Specialist Hospital.

President Muhammadu Buhari last week gave approval for Ekwueme to be taken abroad but family sources said due to documentation challenges the approval was not heeded immediately.

Ekwueme was vice President between 1979 and 1983. He is a founding member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
