Former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu has described the ongoing herdsmen/ farmer clashes as a complex emergency.

He was speaking on the Channel Television Hard Copy programme on Saturday, January 27 insisting that lack of leadership has compounded our ability to unite our country.

He singled out some members of the National Assembly like The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, George Akume, Dino Melaye whom he said were busy celebrating their birthdays and other activities when their kits and kin were being butchered.

Odinkalu said there was no other way to demonstrate lack of responsible leadership than what the lawmakers did when the blood of their constituents was being spilled.

He accepted that opinion moulders could help solve the problem of the herdsmen and farmers but said most of the opinion shapers lack factual accuracy.

Odinkalu cautioned against the policy of cattle colonies saying the timing was inappropriate.

He also said he found no nexus between the herdsmen and farmers clashes with the call for restructuring as being suggested by some opinion moulders and insisted that the federal government must be even- handed in the way she is handling the issue.

He suggested that government should seek the option of dialogue with the people over their landed property, saying that because the governors are in precarious situation now the president must show leadership.
