A 40-year-old applicant, Olufemi Salau, who allegedly beat up a policeman, was on Friday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The defendant who resides at Alagbole, Akute in Ogun, is being tried for breach of peace, assault and resisting arrest.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Essien Ndarake, said the accused committed the offences on Sept. 11 at Domestic Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

He alleged that the accused assaulted a policeman, Insp. Titus Omueye, while he was performing his lawful duty.

“The accused beat up the complainant while performing his official duty and inflicted injuries on him,” he told the court.

Ndarake alleged that the accused unlawfully entered the airport departure hall without any reasonable cause or permission from Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria.

“The accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by conducting himself as a tout and canvassing for passengers in the departure hall,” he said.

The prosecutor said that the accused resisted arrest when the complainant asked him to follow him to the station and in the process, “descended on the complainant.”

He said the offences contravened Sections 116, 117 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 172 prescribes three years jail term for assault.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs M.I. Dan-Oni, who granted the bail, adjourned the case until Sept. 27 for mention.
