The strike embarked upon by universty lecturers a month ago was on Monday suspended.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities had embarked on work to rule to protest non implementation of previous agreements reached with the government on their welfare.

Meetings and consultations were held by ASUU leaders and representatives of the government but only the meeting of Monday, September 18 yielded the conditional suspension of the strike with ASUU directing the members to return to classes immediately.

The ASUU leaders had also briefed their members on the agreement reached with the federal government representatives.

The leaders had earlier embarked on consultations with the members on whether to call off the strike or not. That has been going on in the past two weeks.

Most of the students spoken to welcomed the development and hoped that the government would be sincere in keeping to the terms of settlement.
