Former military president, Ibrahim Babangida has joined the numerous Nigerian statesmen who are calling for the restructuring of the country.
Babangida said on Monday, June 26 in Minna the Niger State capital as part of his Eid el- Fitri message that the devolution of power in the country had become imperative in view of the calls that had become huge of late.
Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar is one of those who recently reiterated the call for the restructuring of the country to make for effective governance.
Babangida said that so much power is currently domiciled at the central government that the states are suffering as a result of inadequate resources to executive projects.
He called for the constitution of Nigeria to be tinkered with to make allowance for areas like roads repairs, agriculture, education and other sectors to be handled by the state government while the federal government is left to deal with matters of security, foregn affairs, military and other areas that would free the centre from excessive interference.
The clamour for devolution of power gained much traction after the 2014 Constitutional Conference report which recommended for restructuring of Nigeria.
Although the All Progressive Congress (APC) used the restructuring of the country as an election campaign, the party appears to be foot dragging on the matter with many Nigerians insisting that the report be revisited and its recommendations put to use.
Recently the Senate called for the document with some Nigerians saying hope is rising over the final implementation of the 2014 National Conference Report.
