The Lagos State Police Command has retracted its statement that the body of Dr. Orji who jumped into the Lagos lagoon on Sunday had been found.

The spokesperson for the Zone 2 Police Command, SP Dolapo Badmos said, “The mother has come to identify the body recovered, but she said the deceased was not her son.”

It was reported earlier that the corpse of Allwell Orji, a medical doctor, who jumped into the lagoon on the Third Mainland Bridge had been recovered by marine policemen.

A police source speaking to The Punch said that Allwell’s mother had been contacted to come for the identification of the body.

“The body of the doctor was found at about 11.30am. We want to be double sure and his parent has been called to come and identify the body,” the source added.

However the Lagos State Police Command has retracted its statement that the body of Dr. Allwell Orji who jumped into the Lagos lagoon on Sunday evening had been found.

According to Channels Television, the Lagos state commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni had confirmed the body belongs to the medical doctor.

He said the body was recovered by the Marine Police at the Onikan end of the lagoon.

Dr. Orji’s body was found three days after the incident occurred.

Until his death, the deceased worked at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Surulere area of Lagos state.

He was said to be on his way to Victoria Island for a meeting with the Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria when the incident happened.

It would be recalled that the deceased on Sunday, March 19, 2017 had asked his driver to stop the vehicle before jumping across the bridge and into the water.

The Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA) in a statement said there was a distress call of a man who parked his grey coloured Nissan SUV about 4.50 pm around Adekunle and jumped into the Lagos lagoon.

The agency said the vehicle and the driver had been taken to Adeniji Adele Police Station for further investigation.
