Breaking: INEC postpones presidential, governorship elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed the presidential and governorship elections.

The INEC took the decision early Saturday morning at a crucial meeting involving its key officials that starred on Friday evening to review the level if preparedness for the general election.

The presidential election earlier slated for Saturday February 16 niw holds in Saturday February 23. Same applies to the national assembly elections.

For the governorship andvstate assembly elections, the exercise now holds on Saturday March 9 as against the earlier March 2 date.

INEC Chairman Mahmoud Yakubu said in a statement that the postponement was carried out because of hiccups in preparation.

He said the Commission will meet with stakeholders by 2 pm today at the International Conference Centre to communicate the development with them abd regretted the inconveniences the shift has caused.

On Friday, many states lamented they were yet to receive the sensitive and other materials needed for the presidential and national assembly elections.

INEC on its part kept assuring Nigerians that the officials were ready for the poll.

Both the APC and PDP, the two dominant parties in the election had at one tine or the other said INEC was being used to rig the election.

Many Nigerians have bought into the allegations.
