President Muhammadu Buhari has proposed a change of the name of the National Stadium Abuja after that of the late Moshood Abiola.

Abiola won the 1993 presidential election that was annuled by former head of state Ibrahim Babangida.

Abiola died in prison fighting for the actualization of his mandate when another military junta Sani Abacha was in power.

Buhari made June 12 the new democracy day in Nigeria last year and signed into law the proclamation last week preparatory to this year’s Democracy Day that coincided with his reelection.

At the Eagle Square in Abuja where this year’s event took place on Wednesday Buhari said the National Stadium Abuja will now be called Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

It was also an opportunity for Buhari to review his administration from 2015 when he first emerged civilian President and what should be expected in his second term in office.

Buhari promised to continue with the task of fighting corruption, insecurity and creating enabling environment for the economy to grow, and said the task of keeping Nigeria one must not be compromised.

He said government will not tolerate those fanning the embers of violence in Nigeria and that his government will be ruthless to them according to the laws of the country.

THe event was attended by leaders from Africa, Nigeria and members of the diplomatic corps.
