President Muhammadu Buhari has enjoined community leaders to counsel youths in their various domains to eschew acts of violence and other practices that are inimical to the peace of Nigeria.

The President gave the advice following incessant violent attacks on Nigerian communities and government facilities in recent times.

Specifically,  Buhari urged the leaders to admonish the youths against being used to incite violence.

In a statement on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, President Buhari asserted: “If we attack institutions guarding us, who will protect us in future emergencies?”

He expressed his heartfelt condolences to families that lost their loved ones due to the ‘madness’ going on in parts of the country.

President Buhari also directed that this year’s Eid-el-Fitr celebrations should be mild owing to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The statement noted that President Buhari, his family, personal aides, members of the cabinet, and service chiefs will congregate in Abuja in full compliance with COVID-19 protocols at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa to observe the Eid prayers.

Shehu also said that there would be no traditional Sallah homage to the President by political, religious or community leaders.
