Indications emerged on Monday, May 1 that operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invaded the palace of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II apparently in search of documents to link him to frivolous spending.
Emir Sanusi has of late been in the eye of the storm for criticising the northern leaders for not doing enough to bring the region out of harrowing poverty.
His recent views in Kaduna State drew the ire of some of the leaders who raised concern over the budget of the emirate and therefore sought for a closer monitoring of the expenses.
They said the emirate has a budget in excess of N4 billion and that the money had not been well utilised to alleviate the suffering of the northern poor, particularly those from Kano.
Some of them are worried that Sanusi’s observations have not tallied with his lifestyle and ostentatious living.
The EFCC was said to have invaded the palace and had access to the Secretary of the emirate’s office where the operatives allegedly made away with some documents.
It is believed the operation was the outcome of a meeting the chairman of the commission had with his man in charge of Kano State.
The EFCC was silent on the motive of the operation when contacted.
