The Nigerian government has said it would not tolerate general stereotyping of the country and Nigerians over recent report of arrest of 80 Nigerians allegedly involved in internet fraud and money laundering by officials of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Abike Dabiri-Eruwa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria in Diaspora Commission said in a statement on Friday, August 23 that much as regrettable as the report sounds, and that accusations do not amount to guilt, all those named should be subjected to fair and speedy trial.

She also advised those whom were said to be in Nigeria to turn themselves in voluntarily to the American authorities to clear their names as the federal government many resort to invoke the relevant international treaty agreement that mandates both countries to do so in matters of established criminality.

Dabiri-Eruwa noted that the despite the negative image the allegation has brought to the country, the Commission reiterates that the alleged crime against a few Nigerians cannot be representative of the true reflection of the majority of the people of Nigeria, both at home and in the Diaspora.

According to the list released by the FBI, virtually all the suspects were Igbo and this had led to tongues wagging.

Recently too, Obinwanne Okeke, Chief Executive Officer of Invictus Group, was arrested over the same cyber crime.

Okeke, 32,  once celebrated in the Forbes list and thought to be a genius until the bubble burst was linked to a $12 million wire fraud.
