FG Renames Abuja Varsity to Yakubu Gowon University

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University by President Bola Tinubu.

Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Monday, shortly after the FEC meeting at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) was established in January 1988 under Decree No. 110 of 1992 as amended, as a dual-mode university with the mandate to run conventional and distance learning programmes.

The university resumed academic activities in 1990.

Former Military Head if State, Yakubu Gowon, ruled Nigeria from 1966 to 1975.

Meanwhile, the Minister disclosed that President Tinubu has approved free transportation nationwide ahead of the Yuletide season.

According to him, the nationwide free train services will commence from December 20 to January 5, 2025.
