The character and comments of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) towards genuine and well thought out efforts of the government to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, have been consistently foul, unpatriotic and lacking in reasonable thinking.
According to the Buhari Media Organisation, every move made by the Buhari administration to curb the spread of the Coronavirus and ensure the well-being of the Nigerian people has met with PDP putting out unfounded, ridiculous and blatantly clueless statements that seek to distract, mix up facts and offend the seriousness that comes with good governance.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, BMO said PDP has adopted a pattern of daily rants that aim at pulling the wool over the citizens’ eyes and attempting to distract the government from its job, at such a sensitive time when all reasonable hands are expected to be on deck.
“PDP’s recent inflammatory comments with regards to funding and procurement of working kits for the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) smack of an extreme lack of patriotism and nuisance contribution to the collective work of governance that requires the support of all Nigerians, regardless of political party affiliations.
“Its claims that the administration has failed to ‘mobilize homegrown researches into COVID-19’ is simply hogwash. It reflects a people who are far removed from reality. They either do not follow recent developments or they are simply only bothered with noise-making; we believe strongly that it is the latter.
“Testing capacity is continuously being ramped up – as is the case with even the most developed nations. Procurements are being made, too, of vital equipment to strengthen the fight against COVID-19 and ensure our frontline health workers have the best tools to work with. It is the earned goodwill of President Buhari that has made the US President, Donald Trump promise Nigeria hundreds of ventilators.
“NCDC’s tracking of cases has been greatly improved. Sincere and patriotic Nigerians are commending the agency, not deriding the hard-work that its operatives are rendering at the frontline.
“Of important mention is the effort being made by Nigerians in medical research; in academic institutions, in security institutions and other professional bodies, that are utilizing their skills in science to create technological alternatives to our needs; they are also making strides in producing potential domestic medications for the treatment of this virus.”
BMO noted that the PDP statement attacking the Presidential Task Force (PTF) and the NCDC was politics taken too far.
“PDP’s attempt to discredit the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19 or the NCDC is politics trumping patriotism. It is an irresponsible characteristic that should be kept at bay at a time when every Nigerian is showing patriotism in fighting an invisible enemy.
“This party voted out of power for its malfeasances and bad behaviour must keep its peace when serious matters of governance are being discussed. It must resist the urge to pollute critical national discourse with foul, insincere and irresponsible commentaries”, the statement added.
