The ward chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Logara/Umuohiagu Ward in Ngor Okpala Council Area of Imo State, Ifeanyi Ozoemena has been assassinated.
He was killed on Tuesday by unknown assassins, an incident that has thrown the community into panic.
Imo State police commissioner, Dasuki Galadanchi, said the killing took place on Tuesday.
Galadanchi said the gunmen rode in an SUV on the night of the attack.
Ozoemena was shot severally shortly after presiding over a meeting of the party in the ward.
A community leader, Martin Opara, told newsmen that the community had been thrown into panic and mourning ahead of the general elections.
Opara said the Eze-in-Council in conjunction with the community’s town union had requested the police to fish out those responsible.
He said: “This killing is strange to our community. Report says that he was shot severally in his house until he died.
“We have met with the Eze-in-council and have sent a delegation to the DPO requesting that the killers should be arrested immediately.
“Logara community is known for peace and we won’t jeopardise peace among us.
“The deceased finished hosting a meeting of APC members in his ward after which gunmen operating in a jeep came and requested to see him. On sighting him, they shot him severally before they left.”
Imo State has been a beehive of political activities that is causing tension due to the way Governor Rochas Okorocha has been going about the politics of the state.
His Deputy, Eze Madumere, recently said Okorocha was out to thrown Imo into a theatre of war because of his desperation to win his senatorial seat election and to install his son in-law, Uche Nwosu who is believed to be his stooge and unpopular among the electorate.
