The suspeded Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN) Mr Godwin Emefiele, has been re-arrested by officials of the Department of State Service (DSS), shortly after he was arraigned and granted bail by Justice Nicolas Oweibo of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Emefiele was arraigned on Tuesday before the court, on a two counts of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition brough against him by the DSS.
Justice Oweibo had granted him bail on Tuesday in the sum of N20 million and a surety in like sum after listening to the submissions of his counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN) and the Federal Government’s lawyer, Nkiru Jones-Nebo.
The Judge had also ordered that Emefiele be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, pending the perfection of his bail as against the request of the prosecution that the defendant should be remanded in DSS custody for further investigation on another matter that may soon by filed in court.
However, as the prison officials attempted to take Emefiele into custody as ordered by the court, DSS officials had attempted to rearrest him, insisting that there are pending cases against the embattled CBN Governor still under investigation.
This was resisted by the prison officials, resulting in fracas between officials of the two agencies at the court premises.
Following the intervention of some unnamed top Nigerias, who were contacted, the prison officials were allowed to take Emefiele and were about to leave the court premises, when he was re-arrested and whisked away by the secret police.
