It is now official that the much anticipated resumption of members of the National Assembly will no longer take place tomorrow, Tuesday, August 14.
The National Assembly was to reconvene on Tuesday, according to the announcement made last week by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun.
But the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity, Abdul-Razak Namdas, told Channels Television on Monday that the House would not be reconvening because there was no firm decision to that effect.
Namdas, who was a guest on Channels Television’s political programme Politics Today on Monday, said, “We are working towards resumption but not tomorrow (Tuesday) specifically.
The fear of impeachment which the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) has been dangling on the head of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu has helped to worsen the already tensed political environment.
National chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole said last week that Saraki must be impeached, having defected from the APC to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Oshiomhole thinks the head of the NASS must be a member of the ruling party, and has the sympathy of some APC chieftains and supporters.
However, many believe the comment goes against the provision of the constitution that says the senators have the right to elect from among themselves their leader regardless of party affiliation.
