The federal government of Nigeria has given fresh conditions to ECOWAS countries for the reopening the closed borders.

The land borders between Nigeria and some ECOWAS countries have remained shut since August.

Countries like Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Benin Republic and Ghana have raised serious concern over the border closure.

Many Nigerians have also said the closure has affected their means of survival

Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama said  on Monday at the end of a committee meeting held at the ministry that the borders could only be opened if the conditions were met.

For example, the minister noted that goods imported into Nigerian market must be escorted directly from the ports of member states to the borders.

He also insisted that ECOWAS countries must respect rules of origin, adding that Nigeria would no longer tolerate repackaging of imported goods.

Onyeama declared that goods coming into the country from ECOWAS states must have 30 per cent local inputs.
