The National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd) on Thursday met with the Senate behind closed doors, where he briefed the lawmakers on the spate of killings in Nigeria.
It is believed terrorists, proliferation of dangerous firearms, kidnappings across the country are unsettling the peace of citizens and raising serious concern.
Senate’s meeting with Munguno came one week after Nigeria’s heads of security agencies led by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin, held a private meeting with the Upper Legialtive Chamber on the security situation in the country.
During the meeting which took place on May 23, the security chiefs and the lawmakers agreed on the need for special funding for the security agencies.
Both meetings were convened as a result of the security challenges facing the nation, especially the Boko Haram insurgency and the killings by suspected herdsmen that have claimed many lives.
During Wednesday’s plenary, Senate President Bukola Saraki had informed his colleagues that Monguno would brief the Senate on the nation’s security.
He gave the hint following a point of order raised by Senator Barnabas Gemade from Benue about the condition of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in his state.
Saraki stressed the need to address urgently tackle the challenges, as a majority of the displaced persons are children.
He also asked the government to continue to play its role in giving hope to a lot of those who have found themselves in such situation by no fault of theirs.
“I think in our oversight committees should play more oversight roles in ensuring the necessary materials are made available at some of these sites.
“I have made commitments and I hope in the next few days we’ll get some donations, tables, desks for the kids and also improve the conditions of where they are being taught and even some of the other places on the camp need significant improvement,” Senator Saraki had said during the previous plenary.
