The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has commenced the rollout of gas licenses to qualified players in the sector.
This development is sequel to frequent collapse of the national grid.
Nigeria witnessed about 12 incidents of power grid collapse in 2024 alone, plunging the country into total darkness. The grid has so far recorded one collapse this year.
A statement on Monday issued by NMDPRA, signed by Jemilah Adama, explained that the development is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to ensure all power generation assets in Nigeria receive the gas needed for a robust expansion of the existing national distribution grid system.
The authority warned all offtakers to ensure steady supply of gas to electricity generation companies or have their licenses revoked. It warned that “no act of sabotage will be tolerated.”
