Former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, has advocated for devolution of more power to states as a way of strengthening our democracy.

Speaking at the Daily Times 91st Heroes Awards on Tuesday, May 17 in Abuja, the All Progresssives Congress (APC) National Leader said institutions such as police and prisons, stamp duties, taxation of incomes, profits and capital gains, regulation of tourist traffic, registration of business names, incorporation of companies, traffic on federal truck roads passing through states, trade, commerce and census among others which were in the Concurrent List in the country’s 1963 Constitution but transferred to the Exclusive List in the 1979 and 1999 Constitutions should be moved to the Residual List.

He was represented at the event by Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola. The event held at International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Tinubu also called for the rationalisation of the fiscal policy, noting that “government correctly seeks fiscal stimulus to energize the limping economy.  One can argue that efforts in this direction are perhaps too modest given the situation that confronts us.”

“Our monetary authorities have done better recently but they need to take additional steps to increase the fiscal space available to government and the private sector,” he said

Tinubu urged the Daily Times to help in building a better future for Nigeria and to work for the progress of the country.

His words: “Nigeria must act in similar fashion. Nothing that any other nation has done is beyond our grasp if we commit ourselves to the task. We have much work to do to create the Nigeria we seek so that the Daily Times may continue to report on the progress of this nation for another 91 years or more.  In doing so, let it chronicle the rebirth of Nigeria as a nation much more prosperous and great than when it was first conceived.”
