Rivers Governor signs bills on secret cult, kidnapping, neighbourhood safety into law

Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike of Rivers State has signed three bills into law.

The new laws are:

.The Rivers State Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) (Amendment) law No.6 of 2018.

.Rivers State Kidnapping (Prohibition) (Amendment No.2) law No.7 of 2018.

.And the Rivers State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Law No.8.

Giving an overview of the law, the majority leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaehule explained that the laws are designed to provide stiffer penalty for people involved in kidnapping and cult activities.

While addressing the lawmakers, Wike said: “What you have done today would go down in history that you have contributed to the security of the state”.

He reiterated that the interest of Rivers State is paramount and there is need for stiffer penalty for cultists and kidnappers.

The law prescribes life penalty for cult activities and death penalty for any cult member

Some Rivers State House of Assembly members

Another set of Rivers lawmakers during the session on the bills

convicted of murder. It also prescribes death penalty for kidnapping.

The Governor advised that people shouldn’t fight their state for their narrow political interest. That no one can be doing well in fighting their people.
