Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has said that the Second Niger Bridge will be completed by the end of this year and will be open for public use soon.

Fashola disclosed this at a ministerial press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said the bridge linking Anambra and Delta states is almost completed, as what remains is the four-kilometer link road on the Asaba side.

According to the Minister, the Lagos Ibadan Express Way will also be completed by the end of the year while the main Carriageway of Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano expressway is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2023.

Fashola said with the bridge almost fully completed, “people can walk through the bridge now unimpeded”.

He pegged major projects under the Presidential Infrastructure Development fund including the 375km Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway estimated at N797 billion; the 11.59km Second Niger Bridge at 206 billion naira and the 127km Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at N310billion, at N1.3 trillion.

The Second Niger Bridge project was first proposed in 1978/79 during the political campaign by the late Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who then, was the presidential candidate of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).

In August 2012, the Federal Executive Council under the immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, approved a contract worth N325 million for the final planning and design of the bridge.
