The Nigeria Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
Buhari appointed Justice Ariwoola as the acting CJN following the resignation of former Chief Justice Muhammad Tanko on 27 June 2022.
On July 26th, President Buhari had sought for his screening and subsequent confirmation as the substantive CJN.
At the resumption of plenary on Wednesday, Senator Ibrahim Gobir, the Senate Minority Leader, moved two motions for the upper legislative chamber to screen Ariwoola.
Gobir’s motions were approved by the legislators when they were put to a voice vote by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.
Consequently, the Senate President called for the screening exercise to be moved forward from where it was listed on the order paper.
Thereafter, Ariwoola was screened and confirmed as CJN having answered questions asked by the Senators.
Satisfied, the lawmakers asked him to take a bow at exactly 12.45pm.
