Tinubu Sworn in As Nigeria’s 16th President, Declares an End to Subsidy, Multiple Exchange Rate

Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu was today, (May 29, 2023), inaugurated as the 16th President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola administered the oath of office to Tinubu and Vice President, Kashim Shettima, at the Eagle Square, Abuja, Nigeria.
Tinubu declared:  “I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, do solemnly swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria that I will preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. So, help me, God.”
The new President, in his inaugural speech, shortly after he took the oath of office, vowed that the era of subsidy payment on fuel has ended.
According to Tinubu, the 2023 Budget made no provision for fuel subsidy, pointing out that subsidy payment is no longer justifiable.

“The fuel subsidy is gone,” Tinubu declared shortly after he was sworn in.

The former Lagos State Governor, said his government shall channel funds hitherto spent by successive governments on petrol subsidy into infrastructure and other key areas to strengthen Nigeria’s ailing economy.

He also promised to abolish the current multiple exchange rate put in place by the Central Bank of Nigeria  adding, unified exchange rate is guaranteed under his administration.

Tinubu also promised to remodel the Nigerian economy to bring about growth and boost the Gross Domestic Product through job creation.

Pointing out that the interest rate is currently too high and will be reviewed, Tinubu assured investors that multiple taxation will also be reviewed to attract foreign direct and local investments.

He said his administration will create one million jobs in the digital economy.

On the issue of insecurity, he vowed his government will rid Nigeria of terrorism and criminality, by reforming security architecture, investing more in security personnel, ensuring better training and providing better equipment for security personnel.

He also promised to end extreme poverty, make food more abundant, as well increase women and youth inclusion in government to discourage corruption.
