There is a degree of uncertainty over the whereabout of the leader of Boko Haram faction, Abubakar Shekau, also known as Jama’tu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS).

The media have been awash with reports that the most wanted Nigerian terrorist was reportedly killed by rival armed group believed to be members of Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

It was reported that the Boko Haram leader was killed on Wednesday during a fierce battle in their Sambisa Forest hideouts.

Sources said ISWAP fighters had invaded Sambisa with heavy gun trucks during the week and engaged Shekau, who was the factional leader of Boko Haram in gun duel, killing him in the fierce battle.

Another account said that Shekau killed himself when ISWAP fighters attempted to capture him.

Nigerian security forces are yet to issue any official statement to either confirm or debunk the report.
